Twitter

A mischevous Twitter-rer has been running amock against recent 'super injunctions' by publishing salacious gossip about innocent celebs who can be easily confused with the guilty ones who have brought the injunctions. I'm sure that Gabby Roslin and Jemima Khan are innocent and that the gossip has been brought by devious newspaper hacks who want a free press.

Regardless of what you may think you must surely agree that a free press (with all its faults) is one of the most important facets of a mature democracy.

It may be said that a football star has no bearing on public life and so what business is it of ours to know about his wrong doings.  True up to a point.  Footballers have massive influence and David Beckham happens to be one of the most influencial people in the world in actuality.

The simple fact is this. If you become a star then you have to accept that many sad people want to know all about you and are prepared to pay for it. This knowledge is bought and sold at a premium.  You knew of this downside before you came to stardom. This thirst for detail is the main reason why sponsors are prepared to pay you lots of money to wear their logos.

Risk of exposure is a stabilising force. If you are so wealthy that a free press is about the only thing saving you from an unfettered and soulless life of debauchery then why would you ever want to lose it ?

Why anyone who is 'famous' or a 'sleb' needs to think twice before paying someone to stick a dildo up their rusty sherriff's - because it is more than kiss and tell with the meeja these days. To be honest i don't care what anyone does as long as they don't hurt or corrupt others and it isn't illegal of course. If papers didn't offer money such knowledge would be worthless, saying that while the grate British public still slavers for such crap there'll not be an end to it!

Ranter - I have no interest in it either.

Philipa - OK

Beast - except I couldn't (wouldn't) use the law to stop it.

All very well to love animals but if those twitter accounts of your country weekends are true, you must be quite some ram, Ranter.
